5304 Lance Corporal A March (or Marsh), 2nd Battalion the Northamptonshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War in Oct 1899. They joined the Kimberley relief force, being part of the 9th Brigade, formed of troops from the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, one-half of the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (other half being deployed in Kimberley)and the 2nd King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. They fought in the battles of Belmont (23 Nov 1899) and Enslin (25 Nov 1899). They were part of the main army advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria and in Oct-Dec 1900 the battalion were part of a column under Major General Douglas which operated in the south-west of the Transvaal. LCpl Marsh died of disease at No 3 General Hospital, Kroonstad, Orange River Colony.

Date of death recorded as 26 Dec 1900 on the cemetery memorial, as 25 Dec 1900 on the South African Field Force Casualty Roll and as 24 Dec 1900 on 'In Memoriam' by S Watt.
