Marum, classed among the self-made men of Polk county, is engaged in the pursuit of agriculture in Sletten township where he has a pleasant home on section 4. Mr. Marum was born in Bergen Stift, Norway, March 3, 1855, and was the fifth in a family of six children born to Johannes and Matte (Overbo) Marum, both of whom are now deceased. At the age of fifteen years, in 1870, our subject joined his eldest brother, Peter, in America, the latter having been in this country for some years previous to that time. Ole J. Marum went to Goodhue county, Minnesota, where he worked for a time and later secured a farm of eighty acres. He went to Polk county in 1884 and filed a claim to land in section 4 of Sletten township. His start at farming there was a team or horses, four cows and about one hundred dollars in money and, with this limited means, he made a start at farming in Sletten township. He threshed two seasons in Goodhue county to raise money for his living while improving his estate. He remained there until 1890 when he removed to section 9 of Sletten township, purchasing land there. In 1899 he purchased land in section 4 of the same township and returned there, where he has remained to build up a good home and is known as one of the prosperous men of his locality. He is the owner of three hundred and twenty acres of land and has surrounded himself with all the comforts of rural life and enjoys well merited success. Mr. Marum was married in 1880 to Miss Susanna Overbo. Mr. and Mrs. Marum are the parents of six children, namely: Tilda; Gertrude; John; Andrea, deceased; Anna and Andrew. Mr. Marum is a Populist in political sentiment but takes little part in public affairs, giving his attention almost exclusively to his farm work.

Services Held at Bethel Church for Ole Marum

Ole J. Marum was laid to rest in the family lot in the Bethel Church cemetery following services in the church on Thursday afternoon, December 3. Rev. Lystig conducted the services. Pallbearers were Henry Balstad, Henry Bartz, Ed. Nelson, T.T. Nesset, Olaf Grundyson and Oscar Carlson.

Mr. Marum assisting in organizing the Bethel church and became one of its charter members. He was active in the church government and served as its treasurer for twenty-five years. He was interested also in community affairs and had been a member of the Sletten town board and on the school board of the district school.

Ole Marum was classed among the self-made men of Polk County. He had settled a homestead and built it into one of the most prosous farms in Sletten Township.

He was born in Bergen Stift, Norway May 3, 1855, and was the fifth in a family of six children born to Johannes and Matte Marum.

At the age of 15 years, in 1870, he came to the United States to join his eldest brother, Peter, and a sister, Andrea, who had come ti this country some years previous to that time. He went to Goodhue county where he worked for a time and later secured a farm of 80 acres.

In 1884, he came to Polk County and filed claim to land in Slettin Township. He started farming with a team of horses, four cows and about $100 in money. He threshed two seasons in Goodhue county to raise the money to improve his farm. He remained on the farm, built up a fine home and became one of the leading farmers of his locality. In 1941, he purchased the Hauger house in McIntosh, he rented his farm, and in March of the year moved into town.

He passed away at his home in McIntosh on November 28.

Mr. Marum, was married in 1880 to Miss Susanna Overbo. They were the parents of six children, four of whom preceeded their father in death. They were Tilda, Andrea, who died at the age of 6, John, 31 who died in 1913, and Anna, 28, who passed away in 1923.

Mr. Marum is survived by his widow, a daughter, Gertrude Knutson, a son Andrew and a sister, Mrs. Dyrdahl.

Among those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Thorson of Melvin, Paul Marum, Big Falls and Mr. and Mrs. Chares Overland of Fertile.
