Leola Smith, 79, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2009 at the Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 10.30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd, Clive.

Leola was born September 10, 1929 in Thorpe, Iowa to Lewis and Viva Carter. She married Leland D. Smith on October 20, 1950. Prior to her marriage, she taught in Tripoli, Iowa. Graduating from Iowa State University in 1970, she returned to teaching, and taught for nearly two decades in the Jefferson-Scranton School District.

Leola will be missed by her loving husband, Leland; daughter, Lindy Smith of Austerlitz, New York; sons, David Smith of Ames Iowa, and Scott (and wife Susan) Smith of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

She is preceded in death by five brothers and a sister. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jefferson-Scranton Community School District Foundation.
