2185 Sergeant A Hearne, 1st Battalion the Oxfordshire Light Infantry. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Gaika on 22 Dec 1899, and arrived at Cape Town on 13 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd East Kent, 2nd Gloucesters, and 1st West Riding Regiment, they formed the 13th Brigade under Major General C E Knox. They joined the main army for the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria, and were immediately in action with Cronje's rear-guard on 16 Feb 1900 as they crossed the Modder River and on 18 Feb 1900 at the battle of Paardeberg. At the beginning of June the battalion moved up to Kroonstad and garrisoned various posts on the lines of communication. Sgt Hearne died of disease at No 3 General Hospital, Kroonstad, Orange Free State. He is also commemorated on the Oxfordshire Light Infantry Boer War memorial in Edward Brooks Barracks, Cholswell Road, Shippon, Vale Of White Horse, Oxfordshire (see: https://www.angloboerwar.com/forum/17-memorials-and-monuments/28258-1st-battalion-oxfordshire-light-infantry).
