2863 Private A Burge, 2nd Battalion the Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's). He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Briton on 5 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on the 20 Dec 1899 and was sent round to Durban on the Orcana, and joined the 10th Brigade under Major General Talbot Coke. They joined the Ladysmith relief force and were between 20-24 Jan 1900 at Venter's Spruit and Spion Kop, but were not seriously engaged. During 14 days fighting up to the relief of Ladysmith the battalion lost 14 killed and over 80 men wounded. They were then brought round to the Cape as part of Hart's brigade and went to Aliwal North to participate in the relief of Wepener. Having defeated the enemy at Rooidam on 5 May 1900 they proceeded to march through the Western Transvaal. One wing of the Somersets was left to garrison Vryburg, the other was taken east of Pretoria. Pte Burge died of disease at No 3 General Hospital, Kroonstad, Orange Free State. He is also commemorated (as Pte L A Burge) on the Somerset Regiments Boer War memorial in Wells Cathedral, Cathedral Green, Wells, Somerset, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/252312/).
