ARNOLD.--Rev. Calvin V. Arnold died yesterday afternoon at his home No. 206 Vestal Avenue. News of the death of Rev. Arnold has been received with expressions of sincere regret by the clergymen and church people of the city as he was one of the oldest and most prominent ministers connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was born in Pike, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, November 11, 1822 and received a common school education. He was ordained at Owego in 1848 and at the time of his death was one of the four living ministers ordained at that time. Rev. Mr. Arnold was one of the old-time circuit riders, who went from parish to parish on horse-back. Seven churches were built mainly through his energy and many edifices were constructed during his pastorate. The First Methodist Episcopal Church at Susquehanna was established and built by him. He was active in church work until his superannuation in 1893. To speak of the death of such a true and noble Christian gentleman requires but little thought, but it does tax the brain to find words appropriate enough to tell of the many exemplary traits of character possessed by the deceased. He fought the battle of life well and has gone to the reward, which it is supposed await all men loyal to their faith and who live up to that good old sacred teaching. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." During his life Mr. Arnold had the following charges: Windsor, 1848, Conklin, 1849, Lanesboro, Pa., 1850-1851, Vestal, 1852, Salem, 1853-1854, Mt. Pleasant, Pa., 1855-1856, Sanford, 1857, Nebraska, 1858, Shepards Creek, 1859, Candor, 1860-1861, Newark, 1862-1863, Hawley, Pa., 1964-1865, Mt. Pleasant, Pa., 1866-1867, Nicholson, 1868, Brooklyn, Pa., 1869, Hawleytown, 1970-1972, Castle Creek, 1973-1875, New Milford, Pa., 1876, Maine, 1877-1879, Vestal, 1880, Kirkwood, 1881-1882, McDonough, 1883-1885, Gilbertsville, 1886-1887, Osborn Hollow and Port Crane, 1888-1890, Westford, 1891-1892. Mr. Arnold's first wife was Mrs. Content B. Buffington. He is survived by his second wife, Nancy M. Tingley; three sons, Seymour F. of this city; Ellis L. of Warren Center, Pa., and Frank M. of Syracuse; three brothers, Chauncey M. of Warren, Pa.; Carrington T. of Windham, Pa., and Abel of Warren, Pa., and one sister, Mrs. George Pendleton of Athens, Pa. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 12 o'clock from the house and at two o'clock from the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church. A large number of clergymen will take part in the funeral services.
