Thomas Mitchell's parents, Ensign Jacob Mitchell and Susanna Pope Mitchell were killed by Indians at the commencement of King Philip's War. They lived long enough to reach the garrison, but died of their wounds, July 1675, Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

The incident occurred when Thomas Pope, his son, John Pope, and his daughter, Susanna Pope Mitchell and her husband, Ensign Jacob Mitchell were killed while fleeing on horseback from their house to the garrison where Ensign Jacob Mitchell and Susanna Pope Mitchell's three children had been sent the day before for safety.

The children of Ensign Jacob Mitchell and Susanna Pope Mitchell, Thomas, Mary and Jacob were raised by their uncle, Edward Mitchell. They all three later married siblings from the same family. Thomas married Elizabeth Kingman, Mary married Samuel Kingman and Jacob married Deliverance Kingman. The Kingman siblings were the children of John Kingman and Elizabeth Edson Kingman.
