Adán was born in Agualeguas, Mexico, the son of Fortunato Benavides and Paula Salinas. He grew up in Edinburg, Texas, and served in the U.S. Army during WWII (1941-1945). He had two sisters, Eva and Inez, and lived in McAllen for the last 22 years of his life. Adan was married twice, first to Pilar Cavazos (m. 1945); then to Delia Sanchez (m. 1966). He had two sons with Pilar, and at least two more children with Delia. He was a good, kind and caring soul.
