He and his family came across the Oregon Trail in 1853 and settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.
Three years later, April 28, 2856, while attending school in Waconda, OR, Joseph and his brother enlisted at Salem, Oregon, in Company "K", 2nd Regiment, Oregon Territory Volunteers. The two of them were engaged the next 6 months in the Indian wars going on in OR. Joseph was a corporal upon his return.
In 1857, he and his brother, Thomas, attended private school and in 1858 the Baptist College in McMinnville, OR. Their father deeply ingrained in his children the value of education.
In 1859 Joseph took 100 head of cattle, given to him by his father, to a homestead in eastern Oregon. (Umatilla County) Not being adapted to the severe winter weather, the cattle all perished. Joseph moved on to the Florence mines in Idaho and discovered the Powder River Mines.
He went back to the Willamette Valley and enrolled in Willamette University in Salem, OR. In 1860. He received his B.S. Degree July 21, 1864.
In 1865 he left for Bloomington, Indiana traveling through Panama. There he went on to school at the state university and got a Bachelor of Law degree the next year.
He returned home and farmed with his father for 2 years and then opened a law office in Albany, Linn County, OR. He then practiced for a short time in Umatilla, OR.
He married Jennie Frazer February 2, 1870 in Oregon.
He then started a practice in Martinez, CA, forming a partnership with Hiram Mills.
On May 12,1870 he was appointed Deputy District Attorney of Contra Costa County and November 5, 1875, he was elected District Attorney.
November 8, 1880, he was elected a member of the California State Legislature.
He was elected a Superior Court Judge for Contra Costa county and began this position December20, 1886. He served until his death in 1900. He died of heart problems.
He and Jennie had 7 children (listed in her biography). Their second child, Madison Ralph Jones "Ralph" followed his dad into law, practicing in Martinez, CA, and was also a member of the California Legislature from Contra Costa County. He and Jennie were buried in this cemetery overlooking their old home.
