When Vidal S (Speedy) Gonzales arrived in America on a boat from the Philippines, he was only planning on a temporary stay

But that was before he graduated from Ohio State University and met his wife, Josephine N.. Plans to use his agricultural degree and return to his family farm in the Philippines were indefinitely put on hold.

The long-time Clarkston resident would live most of his 93 years in the Oakland County area, excelling as a professional caterer, gardener and chef

Mr. Gonzales of Clarkston, died Thursday after battling a lengthy illness

A former head chef at Devon Gables Restaurant, Mr. Gonzales started his own business, Vidals catering from scratch.

His children remember him as a self-made man who knew the meaning of hard work.

"He always tried to work a lot, wanting to make sure he provided for the family", said his son "That's why he started his catering business. He wanted us to have it better than he had it growing up"

"He was a very patient, loving individual" said son D'Arcy Gonales

His daughter Jeanne stated "He exhibited an unconditional will to help others throughout his whole life. He was a very happy, giving person"

Mr Gonzales always worked several jobs, his son remembers.

He was a foreman at the Pontiac Motors Division, and the past president of the Filipino Association of Detroit as well as a member of St. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
