Marie Oles
GALENA, Kan. — Mrs. Marie Hempson [Hampson] Oles, 72, 916 Wall Ave., died at 10:25 a.m. Monday at her home following a six-month illness.

Mrs. Oles was born Sept. 12, 1906, at Tipton, Mo. She had lived in Galena most of her life, except for 12 years in Oklahoma City, Okla. She returned to Galena in April 1974. She worked several years in the county clerk's office in the courthouse at Columbus. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Galena.

She was married to William Oles on Jan. 3, 1955, at Galena. He is the only immediate survivor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Derfelt Chapel. The Rev. Paul Witten will officiate. Burial will be at Hillcrest [Hill Crest] Cemetery. Pallbearers will be H. Simmmons, [Simmons] Howard Litch, Raymond McGuirk, Wayne Bradshaw, Bob Tremble and Rudy Procino.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Miss Marie Hampson Marries William Oles, October 9, 1922.

There are newspaper postings of their marriage in an October13, 1922 edition of the Galena Evening Times, which puts their marriage date 4 days prior: October 9, 1922. It's odd, because she appears as Marie Hampson on all US Census records until 1950, in which she is then Marie Lusk. But from what I can find so far, she appears as Marie Lusk for the first time on a Kansas Census, in Galena, on March 1, 1941. So she had to marry Virgil Lusk between April 1940 (US Census date) and March 1941. But it's very puzzling as to why her obit noted a marriage to William Oles in 1955.

~*~

I think I have an answer to that. The earliest I find her almost always as Miss Marie Hampson, in the Joplin newspapers is 1915. There were 38 records, ranging from 1915 to 1981.

According to the above she married William Oles, October 9, 1922.

Now this I don't exactly understand.

Galena Girl Weds.
Galena, Kan., Sept. 1.—Miss Idean Ryan of this city and Clarence Zimmer of Wisconsin were married at 10 o'clock this morning in Pittsburg, Kan., at the home of Father O'Day. They were accompanied by the bride's sister; Mrs. Don Allen.

Mrs. Zimmer is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Ryan, 823 Joplin street. She was reared and educated in Galena. Mr. Zimmer is a native of Wisconsin. For several months he has been employed in Baxter Springs as an electrician. They will reside in Baxter for several weeks after which they will go to Wisconsin to make their home.

"They were accompanied by the bride's sister; Mrs. Don Allen."
Idean has a sister, Mrs. Sybil Immell.

Now here's a strange thing. I understand this may not be the same Don Allen, and even if it is, it may not be the same wife. However, Mrs. Virgil Lusk, formerly Miss Marie Hampson's sister, Sybil, was divorced from a Don Allen. Idean's sister apparently married an Immell.

The first time I find Mrs. Virgil Lusk, formerly Miss Marie Hampson mentioned is November 1929. No son is mentioned until later. They are married until he dies in June 1948. Even when married she apparently continues to be mentioned as Miss Marie Hampson unless her husband is with her.

After his death she returns to her maiden name.

Now her Oles former mother-in-law is sick and living with her daughter in Galena in 1953. She dies and I assume William Myron Oles from Oklahoma and other members of the family return to Galena during this time and for the funeral.

I assume they met again and were married in 1955, according to both obits.

I also have no doubt, had she outlived him, she would have returned to Miss Marie Hampson. :-)
