The white limestone tablet at the back of the Coulter plot marks the grave of James & Cynthia's granddaughter Melvina "Vina" Coulter, who died at age 18 in 1876 after she picked and ate mushrooms that proved to be deadly poisonous. Melvina was the first child of Richard Lewis Coulter & Mary Jane Stoughton.
Born in the late 1700s, James is our earliest Coulter of whom we have a photograph. This carte de visite was in a small photo album belonging to his youngest daughter Amanda (Coulter) Dale, who outlived her ten older siblings.
