This is one of the oldest graves at Hopewell. Charles Miller came from Antrim, Ireland to Chester County SC with other Scots-Irish pioneers, many of them in the same family. They were escaping religious persecution in Ulster. Around 1822 Charles and his relations and neighbors in Chester County began moving into Henry and Newton County, GA. Charles was the father of several adult sons when he came to the Hopewell area; he was already in the 60s or 70s. He died before April 1, 1837 when his Will was probated. Since he wrote this Will in Dec. 1826, but did not die until 1837 and was inactive in the county records after that 1826 date, it is thought he was physically debilitated and unable to participate in civic or public activities after 1826. Robert Miller, one of his sons, was a founding member of Hopewell and is buried in the same area of the cemetery in a grave with an illegible stone marker. The 1830 Henry County GA census shows Charles 70-80 years old. There is no record of him after 1830 census until his probate was filed on 4-1-1837. Charles married Ann McCaw; she was the daughter of William McCaw of Chester County, SC and Ann Watson McCaw. She is likely buried in Chester County. Additional info may be found in family tree on Familysearch.com. In "Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772" (Jean Stephenson, 1971, Shenandoah Publishing), several Millers were on the ships "James and Mary"[this was the ship with the kids of Josias and Elizabeth Miller, however Josias and his oldest surviving son Robert b1760 immigrated in Jan 1773 on a separate ship] and "Lord Dunluce" which sailed from Larne, Ulster to Charleston in the Fall of 1772. These pioneers settled in Chester and Fairfield Counties, SC alongside other early families whose children came to Hopewell in the 1820s, such as the Thompsons and Chesnuts. They are ancestors of the Millers at Hopewell, proven via deed records in Chester, SC

CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS by BB & NS:
This Charles C. Miller IS NOT the father of Steven Decatur Miller!

Stephen Decatur Miller is a son of Charles Miller, Sr and Sarah Priscilla Lucas who died in York, SC [i.e. NOT a son of Charles C Miller 1760-1837 of Chester, SC and Henry, GA]. Likewise, JOHN Miller 1748-1811 is NOT a brother of Charles C. Miller NOR is Mary Miller Alexander 1765-1847 a sister. Charles Christopher Miller, Sr had 9 kids by 2 wives. He had no kids by his 3rd wife as they married late in life.

Josias and Elizabeth Hindman Miller had the following children proven via DNA testing and records in Chester, SC:
Josias M Miller b: Bet. 1730–1732 in Scotland; Ayrshire,, d: Bef. 02 Nov 1785 in Chester, South Carolina, USA; may have died during RW
md. Elizabeth Hindman Sr b: Bef. 28 Jun 1730 in Antrim, Northern Ireland, m: Abt. 1745 in Ireland, d: Bet. Dec 1798–08 Apr 1799 in Chester, South Carolina, USA

Since his marker indicates he was 77 at death [i.e. b1759-1760] and since his bro Robt inherited under Law of Primogeniture as first-born son of Josias, Robt and Charles HAD to be TWINS with Chas being the 2nd-born twin. Chas most likely:
md 1st Ann McCaw b: 1768; likely Ann McCaw, a daughter of Wm McCaw, Sr; need DNA confirmation, since no records of her marriage to Charles have yet to be found, but deeds imply she is sister of James & Saml McCaw, m: Bef. 1788 in Chester, South Carolina, USA, d: Bef. 1806 in Chester, South Carolina, USA
md 2nd Jennett McBride b: Bet. 1766–1771 in Ireland, m: Bet. 1806–1810 in Chester, South Carolina, USA; rf Deed records; most likely 2nd wife, d: Bet. Oct 1815–Nov 1821 in Chester, South Carolina, USA

DNA assigns descendants of James Reid Miller b1810 in Chester, SC as a son of Charles Christopher Miller. This is incorrect. It is proven via records in Chester that he was a son of Charles Miller who immigrated 1806 into Chester and died 1825 in Chester. Widow Jennett moved with daughter Mary Paul Miller and son James Reid Miller [likely twins] to TN where they died. The 1806 immigrant Charles Miller had to be a 1st cousin of Charles Christopher Miller and his siblings since DNA places him with family of Josias Miller, but deed records prove James Reid is not a son of Charles C. Miller 1760-1837. This can only happen if the 2 men named Charles Miller are 1st cousins.

Josias Miller immigrated into SC 3 times: 1st in 1753, 2nd in 1755 when the 1st 2 kids, John Frederick and Elizabeth Meyer are recorded. The 3rd time Josias immigrated in Fall of 1772 [Elizabeth and the kids] and Josias and Robert arrived in Jan 1773. Their family included 2 single daughters over 16 yr, Jannett and Mary, 5 younger kids aged 2-15 and Josias' widowed mother-in-law Elizabeth Spruce Hindman. Since Robert inherited Josias' land under the Law of Primogeniture in Nov. 1785, the first-born son John had to have been deceased. There is no evidence that daughter Elizabeth Miller came to Chester with the family in 1772-3, so assumption is that she died in Antrim, Ireland.

Since Charles' marker indicates he was 77 yr at his death in April 1837, he had to be born in early 1760. His brother Robert was born April 1760 [proven in Bible records], and thus these 2 men had to be twin brothers since both were born April 1760. Since Robert inherited as the oldest son, Charles had to be the 2nd born twin.
