George Willis Emrick, age 88, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2010, at his daughter's home in Waterville, Ohio. George was born on May 8, 1922, in Toledo, Ohio, to Bessie (Mayer) and James Emrick. George graduated from Waite High School in 1940. He married Barbara Jean Young in Toledo, Ohio, on November 13, 1944. As a member of the Army Air Forces with the 4000th Army Air Forces Base Unit, George was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. George worked for the Western Shoe Company for over 35 years, retiring in 1987. George was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, serving as a trustee and treasurer over the years. He enjoyed traveling throughout the Midwest with his interfaith dialogue group. As an RSVP Volunteer, he led school tours through the Main Library. One of George's greatest pleasures was biking with his brother and his daughter, Gail. They participated for many years in TOSRV, Tour the Scioto River Valley, a 200-mile bicycle tour. George was a member of the Maumee Valley Volksmarch Club and volunteered at the Kahle Senior Center. He and Barb went on many Elderhostel trips. George is survived by his three children, David (Nancy) Emrick, Gail (Steve) Latham of Columbus, and Linda (Larry) Badhorn. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Todd (Michelle) Sanford, Chad Emrick, Bethany (Gregory) Petras, and Amy (Jamar) Miller, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Barbara; brother, Harold Emrick; and grandson, Brandon Sanford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Maumee United Methodist on 405 Sackett in Maumee Ohio. Family and friends are welcome to visit beginning at 10:00 a.m. The family would like to give special thanks to George's Canadian caregiver Lynne and to express their extreme gratitude to Linda and Larry Badhorn for all their loving care of George over the past six years. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Paws and Whiskers, or a charity of the donor's choice.
