Services for Long-time Resident of Pecos Valley Held Saturday
G. M. James, a resident of the Pecos Valley since 1905, died at 12:35 o'clock Friday afternoon at the home in Artesia of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Cole, and Mr. Cole, at the age of 82 years. He was ill about three weeks and death was from pneumonia.
Funeral services were from McClay Chapel at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. I. L. Morgan, pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. S. M. Morgan, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery by the grave of Mrs. James, who died Feb. 28, 1939.
Pallbearers were V. L. Gates, Rex Wheatley, Monroe Howard, Jim Hillard, J. C. Floore and C. E. Mann.
The children are: Barbara, Mrs. W. G. Hill, Artesia; Helen, Mrs. B. H. Thomas, Cheyenne, Okla.; Nellie, Mrs. J. C. Fraley, Riverside, Calif.; Nina, Mrs. Louis Cole, Artesia; Grover James, Toledo, Tex.; Frank James, Littlefield, Tex.; Mr. James is survived also by a sister, Mrs. John Dillinger of Rock River, Wyo.
George Morris James was born Jan. 21, 1860, at Rushville, Ill.; where he grew to manhood. There in 1878 he married Caroline Emerick, and to them were born nine children, of whom the seven mentioned survive.
Mr. James and his family moved to New Mexico in 1905 and settled at Orchard Park, then a thriving community in Chaves County. From there they moved to the Artesia community in 1912. Mr. James engaged in farming in this community a number of years, seven of which were on the ranch now known as the V. L. Gates farm.
Mr. James was a member of the Methodist Church.
Here from a distance for the funeral services were a son of Mr. James, Frank James, and his daughter, Mrs. Juanita Kelly of Littlefield, Tex.
