Served in the 46th IN Inf. Vol. as a Pvt. in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. At his discharge he was aged 20, stood 5' 9" tall, had fair complextion, brown eyes, light hair, and a farmer. Simon Peter was listed as a farm laborer on the 1860 Census for Deer Creek Twp., Carroll Co., IN, living with the family of Gordon Miller. He was hospitalized with pneumonia when he died. An inventory of the possessions of the deceased soldier included: a great coat, uniform jacket, stable frock, one pair trousers, one pair shoes, one knapsack, one pair gloves, and a blanket.
