He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Ann Ballard, who passed away in 2005; his parents, Ivory and Nettie Ballard; brother, Arthur Ballard; father-in-law, Lige Franklin; nephews, Keith Edmundson and John Ballard; great-nephews, Matthew and Eric Mahaffey; and many other treasured friends and family members that awaited him in Heaven.
He was a retired textile worker with Kimberly Clark and farmed for many years. He enjoyed flea markets, bluegrass and gospel music, WGCR Radio, and reading his Bible. His faith gave him strength through many years of loneliness as he continued to profoundly miss his wife and through many serious struggles with his health. He often said that he just took one day at a time and tried to always trust in the Lord, who knew best for him.
He is survived by his daughter, Marie Ballard-Anders and her husband, Nicholas Anders, of Hendersonville, and his son, David Mark Ballard of Asheville; his brother, Harvey Ballard and wife, Pat, of Hendersonville; sister-in-law, Ruth Ballard of Hendersonville; mother-in-law, Naomi Franklin of Mills River; and the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lewis and Nola Franklin of Hoopers Creek, John and Carolyn Edmundson of Mills River, David and Peggy Franklin of Hendersonville, and Johnny and Carolyn Franklin of Hendersonville. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, friends, caregivers, and others to fondly remember him.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, December 5, 2013 in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Owen officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
