Daughter of Samuel Howell and Charity Davis, wife of John Henry Sterling, whom she married about 1837, in Smithtown, New York, and who drowned in the North Fork of the American River, Auburn, California in 1850, and mother of John Henry Jr., William Warren, Charity Melvina (married John O'Neil, married James H. Beckwith), Catharine Matilda "Kate" (married George Filmer), and George Washington Sterling.

Wife of Charles Washington Train, whom she married on January 1, 1854, in New York, New York, and mother of Eliza Adelaide (married Horace H. Fordham), Henry Weld, and Josephine Train (married John Wesley Dickerson).
