Moved to Baton Rouge ca. 1820. He married Sarah in 1830, by which time he was an established attorney. He was the former U.S. Customs Collector in New Orleans.
He and his family formerly lived in the old Philip Kicky home on the present site of the Old State Capital. He was related to the Hicky family by marriage.
