Cletus H. Plantenberg, age 90, passed away peacefully October 14, 2020.
Clete was born October 8, 1930 in Crofton Nebraska, son of Jack and Matilda Plantenberg. After graduating from Fall River High School, Clete enlisted in the Army & National Guard for 4 years of service, leaving rank as a Sergeant. After the service, he worked for Mill Print as a machine operator, where he met his late wife, Noreen, they married June 20, 1953.
While finishing his degree at Milwaukee School of Engineering, he worked for General Motors in the aero space division. He was so excited to attend his 50th class reunion, at MSOE, a few years ago. General Motors had a company wide layoff in 1971, which prompted an inspiration for them to own their own business.
In 1972 Clete and Noreen purchased Dreamland, which became Club Chapparal and they moved from South Milwaukee to Wonewoc WI. They worked hard and dedicated so much of their lives to make it as first-time restaurant owners, which they successfully owned for 38 years, until they sold in 2010. Clete loved his business and he was truly an innovator. He had another vision and that was to create a campground, which he and his son Dennis began in 1999, now known as Chapparal Campground.
Clete and Noreen were married for 60 years. After the loss of Noreen in 2014, he and his dog Bindi were inseparable. He loved taking her for rides in his side by side and loved spending time playing cards, as well as going to breakfast in the morning with friends. He was quite a people person with a great sense of humor, personality and a smile that would light up a room.
Clete is survived by his children Dennis (Diane) Plantenberg of Wonewoc, Randy (Lollie) Plantenberg of Tomahawk and Shari (Mark) Stittleburg of Neillsville; 7 grandchildren: Tracy, Brody, Jason, Cory, Brogan, Kalan and Taryn; 9 great grandchildren: Landon, Shannon, Meaghan, Zayden, Zirah, Liv, Leo, Jordan and Gavin along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Parents; wife, Noreen; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Anna Mae Plantenberg, Harry and Maurita Plantenberg; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dolores and Earl Lazenby and nephew, Dale Lazenby.
