Mary E. Watt is oldest child of John Green and Jane (Baird) Watt of Troy, Madison County, Illinois. She married John Herman Gay on Dec 22, 1878 in Madison County, Illinois and were living in Jarvis Township of Madison County in the 1880 US Census.

Mary and John were the parents of 7 children: Odell, Artie Jane, Myrtle B., Cornelius C., Earl V., Noless A., and Jasper W. Gay. John's occupation was farming in the 1880 and 1900 census records.

The Edwardsville Intelligencer printed a short article in the Troy News on Wed., Aug 18, 1889 stating: "Mrs. John Gay, of Arkansas, is visiting her father, John G. Watt." The date on Mary's tombstone clearly reads Dec. 22, 1901; however, the Edwardsville Intelligencer also reported on Tues., Dec. 24, 1901 that the day before his death, his family received the information that his daughter Mrs. Mary Gay, died that day at her home in Arkansas. This would actually make her date of death as Dec. 21, 1901 since her father died on Dec. 22, 1901. His funeral was held on Dec. 24, 1901.
