Myrtle was traveling from Memphis, TN to Alabama by train. James worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Lucky for us, he was working that day. James was almost 21 years older than Myrtle. He had children almost as old as she was. She was not really a stepmother, but more of a friend to his children.
My grandmother loved my grandfather very much. She never remarried. Myrtle was a devoted Christian woman. A very sweet caring lady. . She was in the Order of the Eastern Star, Memphis, TN Lodge and served 4 or 5 times as Grand Worthy Matron.
When she was still living in Memphis, I remember every Sunday after church, my grandmother would come over to our house and have a late lunch with us.
My grandmother retired from Shelby County Juvenile Courthouse, in Memphis, TN.
My grandmother moved back to Straight Bayou just outside Belzoni, Mississippi. A few months before she died, she had fallen and broke her hip. While in surgery, she had a heart attack, and died on the operating table. The doctors brought her back. After she was able, she wrote in a journal her death experience. She wrote how beautiful Heaven was, her relatives and little dog were there to meet her at the Gate. They kept telling her, "You have to go back. Do not touch the Gate, Myrtle. It is not your time." She kept telling them, "I want to stay." She was sent back. What my grandmother wrote was in 1978. Way before anyone ever spoke or published books on the matter. My aunt still has my grandmother's original journal of her experience in Heaven.
