G.W. Lester Dead

George Washington Lester died last evening at 9:50 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.H. Opdyke.
Mr. Lester was born September 21, 1840 in Coles County, Illinois, came to Kansas in the early 70’s, and settled near Council Grove. For the past two years he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. Opdyke, in Emporia. He was married to Cerilda Edwards in Paris, Ill., in 1870. To them were born nine children, Sydney Lester, of Oklahoma City; Wiley Lester, of Long Beach, Calif.; Elbert and George Lester, of Chicago; Perry Lester, of Bushong; Mrs. L.H. Opdyke; Matilda Lester and Mrs. F.A. Beach, of Brooklyn, N.Y. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sidney Wharton, of Lynhurst, N.J.; Mrs. Mary Atkins, of Pinehurst, N.J.; two brothers, Virgil Lester, of Long Beach, Calif., and Andrew Lester, of Portland, Ore. Mr. Lester was a member of the Americus Masonic Lodge. He served as a corporal in Co. B, 54th Illinois Infantry.
The funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the L.H. Opdyke home, conducted by the Rev. H.P. Wharton. Interment will be in Agnes City Cemetery. The pall bearers will be selected from among the Americus Masons. Relatives in Emporia to attend the funeral are R. Sidney Lester, of Oklahoma City; Matilda Lester and Mrs. F.A. Beach, of Brooklyn, and George Lester, of Chicago.
