He was the son of William Rowell and Melissa Harrelson Rowell, and was the husband of Nancy Miller Rowell.

David Rowell was born May 27, 1834, the son of William Rowell and Melissa Harrelson Rowell. On November 10, 1861, at the age of 27, he enlisted in Marion for twelve months of service in Company H, 23rd South Carolina Infantry (Hatch’s Reg’t Coast Rangers). His group moved up to Richmond Virginia where he developed Pneumonia on November 12 and was admitted to the Chimborazo Hospital. He returned to duty eleven days later in Richmond, VA. In April 1863 he was admitted to the C.S.A General Military Hospital in Wilmington, NC. In December 1864 he was label as being a deserter and absent since September 5. He returned to service but left again on February 9, 1865. David married Nancy Miller Rowell (daughter of George Miller and _______ Snow Miller) around the beginning of the war. He died on June 28, 1919 and was buried in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. (Composed by: Christopher H. Daniels, January 2016)
