PIONEER BEMIS DIES AFTER YEARS OF SUFFERING
Amos Wilson Bemis, one of the best-known pioneers in this valley, died last night after years of suffering from cancer.
The news of the death of Mr. Bemis was received with much sorrow by the people generally, and it cast a cloud over the gatherings of Pioneers at Urbita springs, where the May Day festivities were held, for Brother Bemis, as he was known among the Pioneers, was an active member of the society and attended the regular weekly meetings just as often as his state of health would permit.
The deceased suffered great pain, but the fortitude with which he bore his illness received the admiration of all.
Amos Wilson Bemis was born in New York State 77 years ago. With his father's large family he journeyed across the continent by wagon. The family stopped a while in Utah where Amos Wilson Bemis was united in marriage. Then the family continued their journey to this valley and the deceased had resided on his ranch on West Fourth street near Lyle creek, until his death since 1854.
The deceased is survived by six children - Mrs. Bemis having preceded him to the beyond, June 3, 1902 - as follows: Mrs. Francis Brooks, A. H. Bemis, L. A. Bemis, E. A. Bemis, W. J. Bemis and L. M. Bemis;
also two brothers and three sisters, Charles and Harrison Bemis, Mrs. Joseph Hancock, Mrs. Thomas Roberts and Mrs. Clarissa Curtis.
All the surviving relatives reside in this locality with the exception of Mrs. Curtis, whose home is in Utah, but who is now here on a visit.
The funeral will be held under the auspices of the Pioneers at the family residence on West Fourth street, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Mark B. Shaw will officiate.

AMOS W. BEMIS CROSSES THE RIVER
AGED AND HONORABLE MAN IS NO MORE FOR MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY HIS HOME WAS HERE
Another of San Bernardino's most highly respected pioneers, Amos W. Bern is, passed over the river Monday morning, after being an intense sufferer for many years. His age was 77 years.
The funeral will be held from the home today in San Bernardino avenue, west of the city, at 2:30 o'clock, being conducted by Rev, Mark B. Shaw, of the First Baptist church. assisted by the Pioneer society, of which the deceased was an interested and honored member.
The pall bearers have been chosen from the Pioneer society, and are: Judge C. L. Thomas, C. C. Clusker, W. F. Holcomb, De La M. Woodward, John Brown, Jr., and G. W. Suttenfield.
Amos W. Bemis was born in Jefferson county, New York, being a son of Alvin Bemis., When Amos was 8 years of age the family removed to Ohio, and in 1844 to Lee county, Iowa, where the father died three years later.
THREE YEARS IN IOWA.
The family lived in Iowa three years after the death of the head of the family, and in 1851 the mother with seven sons and three daughters started for California overland. Amos. being the oldest of the family, the greater responsibility rested on him. They did not come through to California, but spent two winters in Ogden, Utah, where the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Julia McCullough, also a native of the Empire State.
Soon after the marriage, Mr. Bemis and his bride started from Ogden, March 20, 1853, overland, for California, arriving in this valley June 5, of the same year. He at first bought 20 acres of land, camping out all the first summer. Later he increased his holdings to 200 acres, which he developed into a fine home, devoting much of his time to stock raising and growing of fruits.
THE REAL FRONTIER
When Mr. Bemis came to San Bernardino it was little more than a fort and trading post. Frequent encounters with wild animals and Indians occurred, and life was uncertain, being combined with hardships of which the present generation knows nothing. In fact, Mr. Bemis brother, Samuel Bemis, met death from bears near San Bernardino while searching for a younger brother, Nephi Bemis who had been killed by Indians.
Mr. Bemis has, during all of his life of more than half a century in this valley, been one of its most highly respected citizens, his name ever being a synonym for honesty and up right living. His wife preceded him to the other side, her death occurring June 3, 1902. Seven children were reared by Mr. and Mrs. Bemis, all of whom except George, are alive. Those living are Mrs. Milo Brooks, Henry, Levi, Irvine, Wilson and Loran. A sister, Mrs. Clarissa Curtis, of Victor, Idaho, was here at the time of death.

AMOS W. BEMIS IS LAID TO REST
The funeral of the late Amos W. Bemis, held yesterday afternoon from the home in San Bernardino avenue, west of the city, was one of the most largely attended gatherings of that kind held here in many months, and showed the general esteem in which the deceased was held by the people of this community.
The service at the home was conducted by Rev. Mark B. Shaw of the First Baptist church, and hymns were rendered by the choir of the same church. The casket was surrounded by many beautiful floral tributes.
The pall bearers were selected from the membership of the Pioneer society, of which Mr. Bemis was an honored member, they being C. C. Clusker, John Brown, Jr., De La M. Wodward, Judge C. L. Thomas, G. W. Suttenfield and W. F. Holcomb.
In spite of the down pouring rain, more than half a hundred carriages of friends followed the remains to their last resting place at the cemetery. At the grave the burial service of the Pioneer society was read by John Brown, Jr.
