Charles Bemis Lies 24 Hours Hurt in Field
Lying with a broken leg and without aid from Monday morning at 8 o'clock until Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, Charles Bemis, well-known pioneer of this valley, is in the Burbank hospital in a serious condition. Bemis, who has been on his ranch, near Calabasas, fell while doctoring a sick mule and broke his leg just above the knee. There was no one with Bemis on the ranch and being unable to move or summon help he laid in an unconscious condition until he was found by passing neighbors.
His nephew, A. H. Bemis, of this city was summoned and immediately drove to Calabasas, a distance of 100 miles with Mrs. Charles Bemis, Clarence Bemis and Mrs. A. H. Bemis.
The neighbors had been unable to move Bemis and he was forced to remain on the ground until an ambulance could be summoned from Los Angeles. The ride to the Burbank hospital was a particularly hard one and Bemis is still in a critical condition. The doctors were unable to set the leg because of the swelling. Mrs. Charles Bemis, who returned to this city yesterday, will go to her husband today.

CHARLES BEMIS
Ranks of the Pioneer society were broken into again yesterday when one of their greatly beloved members, Charles Bemis, passed away. Mr. Bemis died a few days after he was stricken, though he had been in failing health for the last two years, in fact, ever since his leg was broken, the accident shaking his entire system. The end came yesterday just after the noon hour at the home on Eleventh and I streets. He had been a rancher all his life, and there was at his home place that hospitality for which so many of the pioneers are noted. He was the last of 10 children.
Charles Bemis was born 80 years ago in Ohio. Sixty-six years ago he reached San Bernardino, after coming through the middle west and stopping off at many places for some months en routed. He traveled by ox-team with six brothers, three sisters, and the widowed mother. They stayed for some time near the Mojave river, where they were engaged in raising cattle. Two or three of the brothers died there, one being killed by Indians and one by a bear. They came then to the San Bernardino valley.
Mr. Bemis married Mrs. Mary Allen of this city some years later. She survives him.
There also remain two sons, C. F. Bemis of San Pedro, and Ricard Bemis, the latter being recalled here from San Francisco on his way north to Alaska, both of whom were in the army during the world war, though never getting overseas;
also two daughters, Mrs. Grace Sheridan of Canada, Mrs. Bessie Cobalt of San Pedro,
a step-daughter, Mrs. H. M. Schuler of Los Angeles;
and three grandchildren, Cecil and Raymond Covalt of San Pedro, and Norma Davidson.
Charles Bemis was known for his sturdy pioneer qualities of character, for his devotion to his home and family, for his friendliness to all those who came into contact, and he will be missed among all the pioneers of this city and valley, no less than in the home circle.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the chapel of the Mark B. Shaw Company, the Pioneer society having charge of the service and assisted by Elder D. Amos Yates of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
