The son of pioneers John and Elizabeth Bryant. He married Sarah "Sallie" Grider on January 14, 1834. According to a 1914 newspaper article, they had 12 children. However, the census records only show eleven: John (1834), Jasper (1838), James (1841), Peter (abt 1843), Thomas J (abt 1845), Milton (abt 1847), Martha A (1849), David (1851), Henry (abt 1853), Edmon (1856), and Sarah E (1859). His wife's obituary and the 1900 census record both indicated that one child died before 1900.
