The family lived in West Bend and Graettinger before he moved with his parents to Nevada, Iowa, in 1960, where he graduated from Nevada Community High School in 1962.
Dave was always grateful to his mother for encouraging him to go to college.  He applied and was accepted at Louisiana University in Baton Rouge and later at the University of Missouri Kansas City, where he graduated with a degree in Social Psychology in 1967. He was a member of Mensa throughout his life. After college, he became a social worker and parole officer in Kansas City, Missouri.
Dave lived and worked many places in the Bay area of California, eventually moving in 2002 to Riverside County, California, and later to Palm Springs. He studied Theology at Starr King School for Ministry from 1980 to 1984 and was associated with the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Desert. He had also worked as a Systems Consultant for Bank of America, and as a Support Specialist for both Saratoga Systems and Oracle Corporation.
