Obituary for Marilyn Welch
University Park. Marilyn Welch, 88, of University Park died Friday September 11, 2020, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born January 12, 1932, in Rose Hill, Iowa, the daughter of Carl I. and Maude Olive Grace Ellis. She graduated from Rose Hill High School with the class of 1950. Following graduation, she worked at the (old) Continental Overall Factory in Oskaloosa. On February 29, 1952, she was united in marriage to William Welch in Oskaloosa. Following their marriage Marilyn stayed home to care for her family and home. She resumed working at the Overall Factory when the Army shipped Bill to the Korean war. Upon his discharge from the Army, Marilyn left the overall factory to raise their family. Once her children were grown, she again returned to the Big Smith Overall Factory in Oskaloosa. On November 21, 2002, Bill died. With the help of her family, friends, and neighbors, she was able to stay in her home until the last few weeks. Marilyn enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Las Vegas. She and Bill also enjoyed going dancing at various supper clubs. Marilyn’s family was the center of her world. She looked forward to family get togethers and baking goodies for her family, friends, and neighbors. She had a kind and giving spirit and delighted in helping others. She also enjoyed keeping up on current events and politics.
Her family includes her three children and their spouses, Terry and Linda Welch of Oskaloosa, Jackie and Chuck Ferree of Oskaloosa and Curt and Sharon Welch of Pella; six grandchildren, Bryon (Ashley) Welch, Chad (Cassie) Ferree, Colton (Courtney) Ferree, Amy (Welch) McDougall and her husband Chris, Ray (Tara) Welch, and Nathan (Harmony) Deppe; fourteen great grandchildren; and a sister in law, Jean Welsh of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Robert “Bob” Ellis, and Ronald Ellis.
A private graveside funeral service and burial will be held in the Jackson Cemetery near Rose Hill. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. There will be a period of open visitation held on Monday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Jackson Cemetery.
