The 7,000 acre Woodstock Plantation, occupying a Mississippi bend in Washington County, had been purchased in the late 1840's by Alfred Grayson Carter: "The land was selected by Mr. Carter on account of its great fertility, because of the transportation facilities afforded by the river, and because its situation [on a natural levy] made it, (at the time) secure from the annual floods."

In January 1879, the heirs of the estate of Alfred Grayson Carter, dec'd, W, G. Carter, Eleanor S. Carter, Ann B. Randolph, except R. H. Carter (Bankrupt, who has made payments toward the lien on the land), sought that the 5,989 acres of land be exposed to sale and that they receive a deed of quit claim.
