Rasselas married Martha Carpenter on March 24, 1869 in Carroll, Iowa. They were the parents of Francis Ward, Guy, Daniel Rufus, James W, Wilbur, (Eila Maude) Mrs Grant Pelley, (Flora M) Mrs JW Libby, (Florence) Mrs Herbert Cottrill, (Ella A "Nellie") Mrs M Mulberry, and (Sarah Mabel "May Belle") Mrs Percy Goslin.

OBITUARY - Sac Sun - Rasselas Ellis, an aged citizen of Odebolt and a Civil War veteran and GAR member, died at his home at four o'clock Monday morning, having been confined to his bed only about four days, though he has been visibly failing in strength during the winter. Funeral services were held at the home this morning and the body taken to Auburn on the noon train. Burial was made in the cemetery at Grant City. The Rev JA Kettle, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, conducted the service at the house and at the cemetery.

Mr. Ellis was born May 11, 1838 at Middleburg, NY (son of Daniel and Sarah Wilbur Ellis) and was nearing his 86th birthday. He grew to manhood in the state of his birth and at the opening of the Civil War, enlisted in the 76th New York Infantry. He served fourteen months and was then honorably discharged, owing to the fact that he was seriously wounded in the head by a saber cut at the hands of the enemy while out with a reconnoitering party at the battle of Bull Run and disabled for duty.

He was a member of the GAR at Grant City as long as there was a post there and the transferred to Lake City. He came to Sac county immediately following the close of the war and on March 24, 1869 was married at Carroll to Miss Martha Carpenter, who survives. Mr. Ellis was twice elected county treasure in the early pioneer days and served as county superintendent for two terms. He was a teacher in town and rural schools of the county for more than fifty years. He was then said to be the oldest teacher in the state. He served as justice of the peace for 30 years.

He became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church more than fifty years ago, having been converted in a meeting in a schoolhouse southeast of Sac City held by the Rev OS Bryan, a pastor in Sac City. He has been a faithful member of the church and has endeavored to rear his family in the church.

He was the father of ten children, all of whom are living except one son (Guy), who died at the age of six years. He is survived by his aged wife, four sons, and five daughters: namely, Francis Ward, of Alta; Daniel R of Odebolt; James W of Colorado Springs; Wilbur of Akron, Iowa; (Eila Maude) Mrs. Grant Pelley of Grant City; (Flora M)Mrs. F W Libby of Odebolt; (Florence) Mrs. Herbert Cottrill of St. Lawrence, S Dakota; (Ella N "Nellie") Mrs. M Mulberry of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and (Sarah Mabel "May Belle") Mrs. P Goslin of Millboro, S Dakota. He leaves also twenty-eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Goslin and Wilbur came for the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Pelley of Grant City were here when he passed away.
