5791 Private A Pidcock, 1st Battalion (Sherwood Foresters) Derbyshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Suez on 28 Nov 1899 and arriving in South Africa about 14 Dec 1899 and was sent to assist Sir W Gatacre, who had just suffered his reverse at Stormberg, deploying to Sterkstroom, and afterwards held Bushmanshoek. In Mar/Apr 1900 they joined the 21st Brigade under General Bruce Hamilton. They were on the right flank of the Army on the advance to Johannesburg and Pretoria and were engaged in the operations which culminated in Prinsloo's surrender. On 11/12 Jun 1900 they fought at the battle of Diamond Hill in the central Transvaal, about 20 miles east of Pretoria. Private Pidcock was killed in action at Diamond Hill on 12 June 1900. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were later reinterred at Diamond Hill Military Cemetery. He is commemorated on the cemetery Boer War memorial (see: https://www.graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=684098). He is also commemorated on the 1st Battalion (Sherwood Foresters) Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment Boer War memorial in the Church of St Mary, High Pavement, Nottingham, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/145916/).
