Mildred Louis Laney was born August 11, 1922, to Orville and Trula Burkhalter in Seymour, Texas. She had two brothers, George Burkhalter and J.H. Burkhalter, and two sisters, Demetra Smith and Genela Cooper. She graduated in 1940 from Seymour High School and lived almost all of her life in Baylor County until 2005.
On September 8, 1940, she married the love of her life, G.C. Laney, Jr., in Archer City, Texas. They began their lives as newlyweds during WWII on a farm in Young County, Texas, later moving to the farm outside of Red Springs. They had two children, Ronald Lee Laney and Deanna Gail King.
She was a lifelong member of the Red Springs Baptist Church, where she was church pianist and church organist for many years. Serving in the church and taking care of her family was the focus of her life. In the early 1990s, she and G.C. moved from Red Springs to live in Seymour. In 2005, they began their journey into assisted living in Wichita Falls, then Fort Worth, and finally Conroe, Texas, where she was living when she passed away.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, her husband G.C. and her son Ron. She is survived by her daughter Deanna King (husband Kevin, their son Sean King and his wife Beth and son Oliver); and by Cynthia Wardlaw Laney, who is the widow of her late son Ron, along with Cynthia’s and Ron’s son Ron Laney II (wife Dohna, and their two daughters, Sophia and Alee); and their daughter Larissa Michelle Schleuter (husband Patrick) and their children, Whitney Whitfield (partner Bodi, children Beckett Tate and Everleigh Grey); Rheagan Lee Rains (husband Shane, daughter Elena); Zachary; and Braxton. She had 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren plus one on the way, and 3 great great grandchildren plus one on the way. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mildred was always known for being an excellent cook, and great pianist, and was the go-to lady to shoot any rattlesnakes the neighbor ladies found lurking close to their houses. She loved to laugh, and her “favorite son in law” Kevin could make her laugh better and harder than anyone else in the world. She had never flown on a plane until she flew all the way to Cairo, Egypt, to be there for the arrival of her youngest grandchild Sean when he was born. She even rode a camel around the pyramids on that trip. She and G.C. took several trips to Canada to visit Deanna and her family when they lived there, and loved travelling through the Rocky Mountains. But at the end of the day, all she wanted was to be settled in at home, close to her family and loved ones. Now she has gone on Home to her final reward, and she can be with those of her loved ones who have gone on to Glory before her.
