Joseph Henry "Joe" Adams was born about 1845 in Alabama, son of Travis Adams and Keziah Robinson. On November 28, 1868, he married Quintilla Ann "Annie" Pullen in Marshall County, TN, daughter of Elisha Pullen and Nancy Scott. The story handed down in the family is that Annie ran away from home and eloped at age thirteen after receiving a beating from her mother. For that reason, Joe would not allow his children to be spanked. Annie used her inheritance from her father to purchase 25 acres of land on Caney Creek in Marshall County. The deed was recorded March 31, 1885.

In 1891 Annie was very ill and required help with her home and children. Della Emerson, from Coldwater, Lincoln County, was hired to help her. Annie died June 10, 1891, at age 36 and was buried at New Hope Cemetery near Talley Station in Marshall County. Joe received a child's portion of Annie's property, which he sold to their oldest son, Bill, in October 1891. The deed was recorded July 9, 1895.

Joe later married Della Emerson and moved to Alabama. They had six children, including a daughter who was reportedly struck by lightning.
