A memorial service for Venecia Valrie Spellman 79, of Tyler, will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 3, 2017, in the chapel of Marvin United Methodist Church, Tyler, TX.

Venecia Valrie Schroeder Spellman was born February 17, 1937 in the Greunau Community near Yorktown, Texas. Due to financial difficulties, at the age of 9, she was sent to live with her sister, Bernice Schendel, and her family. She graduated from Runge High School in 1955 where she participated in the marching band as a snare drum player and Drum Majorette her senior year. Also popular with her classmates, she was elected Homecoming Queen and Miss FFA.

She attended secretarial school for a few months, but left when she married Laurance R. Spellman of San Antonio, Texas on September 15, 1955. It would be three years before they had their first child. Three years she considered wasted. She wanted children and lots of them.

She and Laurance would have four children together and build a life far beyond the meager start. Laurance was the creative and driving force with ideas, Venecia was on the execution team. They purchased a farm, but Laurance had to continue a job in the city to generate much needed cash. He used to say, "My wife is in the cattle business not me."

There was not much Venecia couldn't do when it came to running a household. She cooked, canned, gardened, sewed, and most of all cared for her growing family. The radio was always on, she was always swaying and singing to the music.

She shared her voice with the choir at the La Vernia United Methodist Church where she served as the choir director. She also served as Sunday School teacher and prepared the church bulletins each week.

She loved playing games, golfing and doing puzzles with her family. She and Laurance also traveled extensively all over the United States and internationally.

She and Laurance lived in La Vernia, Texas, Houston, Texas, Carrollton, Texas, Guadalajara, Mexico and finally Tyler, Texas. She spent her final days at the Garden Estates Assisted Living in Tyler. She loved the staff at Garden Estates. The family would like to thank them for being such a friend to her. She felt loved and cared for by everyone there.

Venecia passed away on November 22, 2016 in Tyler, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurance Rupert Spellman, her parents, Otto Schroeder and Hertha Audilet Schroeder and four of her sisters, Marguerite Schmidt, Elaine Luddeke, Bernice Schendel, and Annie Bell Clark. She is survived by her sister, Vella Mae Strecker of Bazine, Kansas, and her four children Joycelyn Spellman of Carrollton, Texas, Patty Bronaugh and her husband, Jim, of Lewisville, Texas, John Spellman and his wife, Penny, of Tyler, Texas and Tom Spellman. She is also survived by three grandsons, Brooks Bronaugh and his wife Emily, of Abilene, Texas and Joseph and Matthew Spellman of Tyler, Texas.
