A memorial service for Laurance Rupert Spellman 87, of Tyler, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, in the Chapel of Marvin United Methodist Church with Dr. Doug Baker and the Rev. James Schendel officiating.
Laurance was born March 29, 1927, in Yancey and passed away on July 20, 2014, in Tyler. He married Venecia Valrie Schroeder on Sept. 15, 1955. in San Antonio.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Venecia Schroder Spellman; children, Joycelyn Spellman, of Carrollton, Patty Spellman Bronaugh and her husband Jim, of Lewisville, John Spellman and his wife Penny, of Tyler, and Tom Spellman, of College Station; three grandsons, Brooks Bronaugh, Joseph Spellman and Matthew Spellman; and a sister, Judith Meril Adams, of San Antonio.
Laurance was predeceased by his parents, Paul R. Spellman and Jessie V. Spellman (nee Smith); and siblings, Kenneth Spellman, Bob Spellman, Joycelyn Stephens (nee Spellman), Ted Spellman.
Laurance Rupert Spellman was born in Yancey on March 29, 1927. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He earned a BS degree in agriculture from Texas A&I in Kingsville. Prior to his last year of college, he spent a year in Mexico after answering an ad for cowboys who could ride a horse and speak Spanish to work in the Mexican American Commission for the eradication of Aftosa fever in Mexico.
Upon graduation he went to work for Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) where he traveled to dairies in South Texas testing milk production. During this period he met his bride, Venecia.
He worked for the USDA Milk Market Administration in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. In 1968, he learned to program computers and developed a system that revolutionized the Milk Market Administration. These programs are still in use today.
After retiring in the '80s, he and Venecia traveled extensively, lived in Guadalajara, Mexico, and finally relocated to Tyler.
