SANTA CRUZ -- Memorial services will be held Monday for former County Supervisor Russ McCallie, who died Thursday in Santa Cruz. He was 62.

A native of Oklahoma, Mr. McCallie was a resident of Santa Cruz County for the past 50 years. He served five years in the U.S. Amry, three in combat. He was the former owner of a service station on Soquel Avenue and Water Street and the former owner of Graham Hill Liquors. He also owned a consulting firm, called Governmental Research Associates.

Mr. McCallie was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1962 from the Third (then-Seaside) District, defeating Hulda McLean. He was re-elected to the post in 1966, running without opposition. He was named chairman of the board in 1964, 1965 and 1968. During his term in office, Mr. McCallie was involved in the planning and construction of the current County Center and helped set up a pollution control agency and worked on a county transportation study. In the last years of his term, he becomes increasingly concerned with environmental matters and the control of development of the county.

County Supervisor Dan Forbus, first elected in 1969 when McCallie was on the board, said McCallie was an "outstanding supervisor."

"He was very patient and fairly quiet. He didn't make a lot of noise, and got things accomplished without a lot of fanfare," said Forbus. McCallie respected county departmental heads "and they respected him."

Forbus said, "he (McCallie) went out of his way to help break me in. He helped me through the first budget. He was very patient."

McCallie was defeated by Phil Harry in 1970 after a hard-fought campaign. He ran for office again in 1974, in an unsuccessful bid for County Clerk.

He was a member of Santa Cruz Masonic Lodge, No. 138. He headed up the county Community Chest Drive on three occassions.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy McCallie of Santa Cruz; daughters, Tina McCallie-Erickson and Karen McCallie, both of Santa Cruz; sisters Ella Dunbar of Muleshoe, Texas and Stella Hilliker of Salinas; and granddaughter, Amelia McCallie of Santa Cruz.

A memorial service be at 7 p.m., Monday at Foursquare Gospel Church, 4001 Granite Creek Road, Scotts Valley. White's and Wessendorf Chapel, 138 Walnut Aveue, Santa Cruz is in charge of arrangements.

Interment will be private.

Contributions to the Diabetes Society of Santa Cruz County, P.O. Box 212, Capitola, 95010, are preferred.
