Gene was the second of two sons of Lebert E Jordan and his first wife Isabelle Grogan. Their mother died when the boys were young and their father's remarriage added 5 siblings to the family. On Nov 23, 1927, Gene married Esther Violet Monson (1905-1997) and the couple raised two children, Darrell Eugene and Beverly June. In 1930 they are living in Minneapolis but by 1933 had moved to California, which remained their home. The 1940 census finds the family in Los Angeles, where both parents work in retail sales for a department store. When he registered with the draft board in 1942, Gene worked for Softwater Equipment Company in Los Angeles.
