Frank was the second of eleven children (one adopted) of Joseph Nicholas (1855-1933) and Anna Mary Schleh (1857-1930) Schaaf. He was born and raised on the family farm in Dublin, Swift county, MN and continued to farm in Dublin all his life, first at home and then on his own farm. On October 24, 1906 in Swift Co., he married Catherine Loretta (Kate) Commerford (1883-1953). The couple raised seven children, five sons and two daughters, all but one of whom survived their parents. Their son Thomas John (1916-1938) died in a hunting accident.

Frank died after a long illness. In 1948, he made his will, probated in 1953. He is buried in the private Schaaf family graveyard in Murdock, established on lands owned by Frank's uncle Valentine George Schaaf and Val's wife Caroline Elizabeth Jordan Schaaf. The image shows his gravestone (upper right) next to that of his eldest child, William Michael Schaaf and William's wife Genevieve Emma Marie Anderson.
