THE 1850 FEDERAL CENSUS lists Joseph as a brick mason and as being born in North Carolina. The 1870 Federal Census also lists him as a brick mason. He served in the Confederate Army, CSA, 5th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Private.

Joseph's father was John Dotherow. John Dotherow and Jonathan Dotherow were two different people married to two different Clemmer women.
