A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 29, 1864 and was mustered into federal service August 30 as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. On May 29, 1865, he was admitted to Slough U.S. Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia, with a case of "typho-malarial fever" and discharged by general order June 6, 1865, five days after the rest of the regiment, suggesting that he was too unwell to return home on June 1.
