3744 Private A Garvey, 1st Battalion the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was serving with his battalion in South Africa when the war broke out, and on 20 Sep 1899 the battalion headquarters and four companies of the battalion were sent to Kimberley. The remaining companies of the battalion were put into the 9th Brigade when Lt Gen Lord Methuen organised his column at Orange River in Nov 1899 for the relief of Kimberley. These companies of the battalion were not engaged at the battle of Belmont on 23 Nov 1899, but fought at the battle of Graspan (Enslin) on 25 Nov 1899 and at the battle of Modder River on 28 Nov 1899. Pte Garvey died of enteric fever (typhoid) at Orange River Station, Cape Colony aged 25 years. He was buried in the military cemetery, Orange River Station. His remains were later reinterred at West End Cemetery, Kimberley. He is also commemorated on the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Boer War memorial in Avenham Park, Ribblesdale Road, Preston, Lancashire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/165853/).
