Francis Keyes was born 15 Apr 1771 in Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts. Francis was the 3rd of 6 children born to Thomas Nicholas Keyes and Mary Temple. His siblings were: Lucy Keyes, Aug 1765; Asa Keyes, 21 Sep 1768; Luther Keyes, 20 Sep 1772; Lucy Keyes, 27 Jul 1778; Luther Keyes, 8 May 1781.

Francis married Temperance Sanders about 1802 in New York. They had 4 children: Ursula Keyes, 21 Jan 1804; Mary Keyes, 2 Jun 1808; William Henry Harrison Keyes, 20 Nov 1812; Perry Keyes, Apr 1815.

Francis and Temperance moved to Ohio before 1804 to settle the Frontier. New London, Ohio Township records show Francis Keyes moving there in 1818. They also show Francis was involved in planting the first orchard from seeds in 1820 and 1822. They also indicate Temperance was the first adult to die in the township in May 1819 of consumption (Tuberculosis).

I found a family group sheet showing Francis married Elizabeth Porter Scribner (called Betsey), 18 Jul 1819, who was the daughter of Thomas Porter and Phebe Leavitt. Her first husband was Paul Scribner. Francis and Betsey may have had a daughter about 1841, named Julia Keyes.

Francis died 18 Apr 1851 but I've found 2 references to different locations. One has him dying in Springfield, Illinois and the other has him dying in Huron county, Ohio.

Gravesite Details

This may not be the right cemetery for Francis. His first wife is buried here, but I also found a family group record showing his death in Springfield, Illinois.
