Spencer Elwood Elliott Sr was born 27 Oct 1903 on the homestead of John Morgan Elliott and Martha Jane Mitchell. John M Elliott arrived in 1876 a covered wagon age 19 with his parents from Malaga, Ohio to Scottsville, Mitchell County Kansas.

William M Elliott was born in 1825 in Morris, Washington County Pennsylvania on his father's homestead William Atkinson Elliott Jr (1793-1872) and Jemima Winget who it was passed from his father William Atkinson Elliott Sr (1751-1821) and Elizabeth Atkinson.

William M Elliott married first wife Nancy Ashbrook in 1845 who died 6 years later 1851 she was buried on the old William A Elliott Sr Cemetery on their land. William M Elliott then marries Sarah Jane Curry in 1855 this is confirmed by family records. She was 15 he was 30. They travel in covered wagon to Malaga Ohio in 1863. Several children are born there. There were 11 total living children (8 boys 1 boy David 1871 died as infant and 6 girls 2 girls died as infants Harriet 1875 and Anna 1876).

John Morgan Elliott met his wife in Beloit, Kansas. Martha Jane Mitchell was travelling with Josiah Mitchell (adopted but not related). They were married 15 Nov 1877 in Beloit, Kansas. Then moved to Rushville Township in southern Phillips County in the 1878 near Bow Creek. Their first homestead, under President Lincoln's "Homestead Act", was a sod house first for 12 years as they built a 2 story limestone rock house with a well and barn on a 160 acre section of farmland used for wheat and cattle. They moved into the new 2 story stone home in 1892 when Sarah was born.

The John Morgan Elliott family had 11 children 7 boys and 4 girls of which 2 girls died. Minnie died as infant and Elizabeth died age 3 of food poisoning. The first 5 boys were born in the sod house: Frank, Albert, William, Fred and Pearl. The rest of the family were born in the 2 story rock house: Sarah, Elizabeth, Robert, Spencer and Nellie.

All Elliott men began their marriage on another section of land 160 acres 1 mile East of the original Elliott homestead in a one story 2 room Rock House with 2 windmills a propane tank and a shed and.a pond except Spencer. This land was ultimately passed down to Spencer Elwood Elliott Sr after his father passed in 1942 and the to Spencer Elwood Elliott Jr when his father passed in 1974. It was sold after Elwood Elliott Jr passed in May 1999 by his wife Carolyn McClain Elliott.

Spencer began his marriage on the original John Morgan Elliott homestead with Veda Fern McCue. They were married on 7 Jun 1924 in Stockton Kansas. Three children were born: Spencer Elwood Jr (Carolyn McClain), Luetta Fern (John Boeve) and Donna Jean (Dale Vose). They all attended a one-room school called Tanyard School District near the original homestead. John was a member of the school board and created the Bow Creek Cemetery where his father William M Elliott and wife Sarah Jane Curry and other family were buried.

The original John Morgan Elliott homestead was passed down to the youngest daughter after his death in 1942 to Nellie Mae (Elliott) McCue and her husband Earl Freeman McCue.

In the late 1930s Spencer and Robert left the farm because of the depression and drought and moved to Phillipsburg to begin a store together called Elliott Hardware. It was on Main Street in between the old First National Bank and Rankin Drug across from Martha's Cafe. It also provided residents with propane from tanks at the railroad yard. It operated for 30 years until 1964 when it was sold.

Spencer lived on F Street very close to the schools and his children attended schools in Phillipsburg all graduating from Phillipsburg High School.

Elwood Elliott worked for his father at Elliott Hardware store until he left for Korean War in 1951-1952 then married in Dec 1953 to Carolyn McClain. They met in Stockton, Kansas at Uncle Albert McCue's Midway Cafe. She was a waitress there. Elwood would leave the Hardware store for the U.S. Post Office where he was a rural mail carrier for 37 years in Phillipsburg Kansas.

Carolyn would graduate from Fort Hays State in Hays with a Business teaching degree. She taught for over 20 years at Phillipsburg High School including all of her children: Robin Lynn (Dave Van Allen), David Scott (Kenda Heize & Vicky Rittmann), Cameron Michael (Carolyn Cox), Michaela Suzanne (Doug Colson & Greg Pate) and Shannon Elice (Ken Seeger).

In retirement years Spencer and Veda worked part-time for their in-laws John and Rose Boeve at the Bissell Hotel as desk clerks.

David Elliott (grandson) first job was at the Bissell Hotel cleaning the lobby floors and trash and carry clean linens to the maid's closet. This included 3 buildings a hotel, motel and annex. The railroad crews stayed there. David also worked at Olliff and Boeve Furniture in Phillipsburg during High School. Graduated from the US Naval Academy with Aerospace Engineer degree 1977 in Annapolis, Maryland and 30 years in the U.S. Navy as a pilot and 20 years at TI and Raytheon in Dallas, Texas as an engineer.

Spencer and Veda attended the United Methodist Church of Phillipsburg Kansas for their entire time they lived in Phillipsburg. They were the janitors for the church until Spencer passed. He was also janitor for the First National Bank of Phillipsburg Kansas.

Spencer passed in 21 April 1974 from emphysema and pneumonia at the age of 70. His funeral was in the United Methodist Church of Phillipsburg and he was buried in Fairview Cemetery of Phillipsburg, Kansas. He predeceased his wife Veda who married Raymond Townley of Glade, Kansas.
