On 11 November 1883, Hettie was baptized at St. Gall Catholic Church in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Her baptismal sponsors were Charles McCarthy and Rosanna McCarthy, a paternal uncle and aunt. The family surname was also spelled "Connelly" in various sources.

No marriage record has been found so the man's first name and marriage date are unknown. Little is known about Hettie until she shows up as a widow in the 1930 census.
