James Brooks was married to Lydia Bennett Brooks. They had the following children:

He was with the Ohio Militia as a private in the War of 1812 with Capt. John Harrison's Company.

He moved his family from Schoharie County, New York, to Ohio in 1825 by way of the Erie Canal, and purchased 135 acres at Bennett's Corners, and paid $2.50 per acre.

James Brooks had great influence on the little settlement of Bennett's Corners; he donated the land for the cemetery, the church and the school building. His was the first burial at the Bennett's Corners Cemetery.
