Mary Cook was the daughter of John Cook, an early pioneer of the Arkansas Territory. He played a significant role in the development of early statehood and Searcy. John Cook signed the petition requesting that Searcy become the county seat. He, along with two other men, donated 10 acres as a building site for the courthouse. He also served as a judge in early White Conty.

Mary's mother, John's first wife, has not been identified at this time. They were married in Tennessee before moving to the territory. Her death occurred before 1836 when John Cook married his second wife, Martha. Mary and her brother, William, were the only children born to John and their mother in Arkansas. Her other siblings were born in Tennessee, before moving to the Arkansas Territory.

Mary married James Bybee in 1838 and had four children:

Mary Elizabeth Jane Bybee
Joseph Marion Bybee
Nancy Safronia Angeline Bybee
Martha Bybee

Her life was, sadly, much to brief.
