Loretta Diede, daughter of Emelia (Zimmerman) and Andrew Diede, was born July 17, 1918 near Eureka, SD. She was brought up near Venturia, ND and attended Detmold Rural School. She then worked as a hired girl for neighboring families. Loretta married Rudolph Merkel on November 16, 1939 at the Bertsch farm Church which was close to Loretta’s home farm. They lived in Hosmer the first year of marriage and then purchased and moved to the Krueger farm seven miles south of Bowdle. Rudy and Loretta spent many years working side by side on the farm. They remained on the farm until 2003, at which time they moved into Bowdle. Rudy died January 13, 2014 and Loretta lived the rest of her life at her home in Bowdle. She was a member of Evangel United Methodist Church in Bowdle and, when it closed, attended the Bowdle Church of God. She enjoyed quilting, word search puzzles, and making German food. Loretta was an exceptional baker and was known for her delicious pies.
Loretta Is survived by two sons—Lorance Merkel of Bowdle and Clyde Merkel of North Carolina; two daughters—Alice (Jake) Helm of Brooksville, FL and Lois (Jack) Mumford of Farmington Hills, MI; one sister, Verna Fischer, of West Fargo, ND; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great, great grandchildren.
In addition to Rudy, she was preceded in death by her father, Andrew, on November 1, 1957; her mother, Emelia, on March 9, 1984; and nine siblings.
Honorary bearers will be Loretta’s caregivers.
Casketbearers will be Alex Nauman of Colorado Springs, CO; and nephews Jerry Sayler, Duane Sayler, and Jimmy Diede of West Fargo; Bruce Fischer of Park Rapids, MN; and Allan Diede of Fargo, ND.
Loretta’s family prefers memorials to the Bowdle Senior Center, PO Box 144, Bowdle, SD 57428 or to the Bowdle Youth Center, 2018 6th Ave, Bowdle, SD 57428.
