Muriel Barth-Higgins, 87, of Brevard, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.
She was a daughter of the late Monroe and Katherine Crolius Marks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Higgins, who died in 1991, and a daughter, Randi Monica Barth, who died in 2000.
She was a resident of New York City for 61 years before retiring to Brevard. She was an educator in New York for 27 years, pioneering strategies to teach reading for under privileged children in the ghettos of South Bronx, N.Y. Her huge respect and love for education was shared by her in everything she did.
Survivors include her daughter, Claudia E. Wolf and husband, John, of Alabama; three grandchildren, Julie Wolf, of Bronx, N.Y., Jennifer Wolf, of Minnersville, Pa., and Jason Wolf, of Alexandria, Va.
She was an elder and member of Davidson-River Presbyterian Church where she led Bible studies, was a circle leader for many years, and eventually coordinated all of the circles in the church. She was a member of AAUW and she worked one day a year as an election poll worker on Election Day.
A Celebration of Life service was held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Davidson-River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating.
The family received friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
