THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, August 1, 1940, page 1, column 3. "MRS. JAMES GARDNER 1864-1940. Clara Etta Gardner, daughter of Louis and Julia Holstclaws, was born in Jasper county, Iowa, on January 27, 1864, and died at her home in Maxwell, Iowa, about noon on Sunday, July 28, 1940; aged 76 years, 6 months and 1 day. During the winter she fell, breaking her hip. She never recovered form the shock. She grew to womanhood in the Peoria community. On March 10, 1892, she was united in marriage to James M. Gardner at Maxwell. Following their marriage they continued to live in the Peoria community until about four years ago when they moved to Maxwell. Four children were born to them, two of whom preceded her in death: Zella about five years ago and Bessie about twenty-eight years ago. About fifty years ago Mrs. Gardner united with the then Peoria Methodist Protestant Church. Her membership continued there until her death. She was a good wife and mother and respected by all who knew her. Surviving are her husband, James M. Gardner, of Maxwell; one son, Charles Gardner, of Peoria, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Andrew Morgan, of Alleman, Iowa; one brother, William Holstclaws, of St. Petersburg Florida; 26 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Many other relatives and a large number of friends also mourn her death. Funeral services were held at 2;00 p. m. on Tuesday, July 30th, in the Peoria Methodist Church. The Reverends H. B. Fay and Judson T. Perki9ns, pastors of the Peoria and Maxwell Methodist Churches, were in charge of the service. Burial was made in the Peoria cemetery."
